Show support for a cleaner Maui County, and for a final push to get Mo’olele in the water

Posted on September 19, 2013 at 12:00 AM by Office of Council Services

Hui O Wa`a Kaulua, Malama Maui Nui and Surfrider Foundation Maui Chapter will host a full day of beach cleanup, water sports, canoe tours, and more, in honor of the birthday of the Voyaging Canoe Mo'okiha O Pi'ilani.

Lahaina Town Clean up
Activities will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Kamehameha Iki Park from 9 a.m. until sunset. Enjoy a full day of fun in the sun and under the stars with The Hui O Wa`a Kaulua Crew. All funds raised from the event will support the Launch of the Mo'okiha O Pi'ilani on December 21, 2013.
Councilmember Elle Cochran is expected to join the annual Lahaina Town Cleanup, which will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Kamehameha Iki Park, next to 505 Front St. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, water bottles, litter grabbers, small nets for cigarette butts, and trucks to haul rubbish.
“Volunteering to pick up litter from our beaches is one way we can give back to our environment. This event also helps us honor cultural traditions and to pass them on to our younger generations,” said Cochran. “I learn so much about important issues in West Maui by working hands-on with the community.”
The annual clean-up has boasted about 1,000 volunteers over the past 9 years who have collected 40,000 pounds of rubbish.
The main sponsor for this year’s clean up is Goofy Foot Surf School.
LuLu's, Pacific O's, Aloha Mixed Plate, Star Noodle, and Tropic Water will be providing lunch and beverages.
Other supporters of the event include Malama Maui Nui, Surfrider, The Hui O Wa'a, Boys and Girls Club, Quiksilver, Hurley, Billabong, Honolua Surf, Local Motion, Lahaina Surf Schools, Pacific O's, Ace Hardware, Volcom, The Ritz-Carlton, Keeaumoku Kapu and family, Myrna Ahee, Nestor Ugale, Kepa, The Lahaina Restoration Foundation, The Surf News Network, Solomon Antonell, and Flo.
