BREAKING: Renaming County facilities after youth mentors

Posted on May 6, 2014 at 12:08 PM by Office of Council Services

The Maui County Council today passed the following bills on second and final reading:

  • Bill 30 (2014), renaming Kahului Pool to the Coach Spencer Shiraishi Memorial Pool. Spencer Shiraishi Jr. testified that renaming of the pool will be an honor to his family and to the people who knew his father as a coach and mentor.
  • Bill 28 (2014), naming Field 6 at Eddie Tam Memorial Center in Makawao after William "Blee" Amoral Sr. A testifier today shared a story about how Amoral mentored him and encouraged him to finish school, as the first in his family, with a scholarship to play baseball.

In other news, the Council adopted Resolution 14-48 recognizing May 2014 as Community Action Month in Maui County. The resolution was presented to Lynn McNeff, Executive Director of Maui Economic Opportunity, Inc.

"Helping people help themselves is the key to economic equality," said Council Chair Gladys Baisa, who served as Executive Director of MEO for 37 years. "We are the best in the state, so hold the banner up high!"

Bills that also passed on second and final reading include Bill 27 (2014), adding "Hawaiian outrigger canoeing" to the definition of ocean recreational activity, and Bill 26 (2014), authorizing exemptions from full water system development fees. In his opening remarks,

Councilmember Don Couch said "I love you, Mom," and thanked all mothers for "providing guidance through every difficult decision we need to make."

 Happy Mothers Day!
