Clerk makes determination on objections to mayoral nominations

WAILUKU, Hawaii – The Office of the County Clerk has made preliminary determinations on objections to the nominations of Nelson Waikiki Jr. and Neldon Mamuad, both of whom have filed papers to run for mayor of Maui County, County Clerk Danny Mateo announced today.

Mateo said Waikiki’s nomination was challenged based on concerns about the residency requirements to run for mayor, with the objection noting the addresses listed on his nominations papers do not exist, making the sworn certification provided by Waikiki “improper.”

According to Mateo, Waikiki updated both his residential and mailing addresses prior to the filing of his nomination papers, which cured the problems and brought his nomination papers into compliance with Sections 12-3(a)(6) and 12-3(a)(11) of the Hawaii Revised Statutes.

Mateo also noted another candidate who filed to run for mayor, Neldon Mamuad, received an objection alleging failure to file a financial disclosure statement concurrently with his nomination papers, which is mandated by Section 10-3 of the Maui County Charter.

“By not filing his financial disclosure statement concurrently with his nomination papers by the June 3 deadline, Neldon Mamuad failed to comply with the requirements,” Mateo said.  “His oath as to compliance will be deemed invalid and his nomination papers incomplete and void.

Pursuant to nomination procedures, the Office of the County Clerk will be filing a complaint with the circuit court for a determination as to Mamuad’s qualification to be on the ballot, Mateo said.
