Special Council meeting scheduled to address mayor’s budget veto

WAILUKU, Hawaii – A special council meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 23, at 9 a.m. in the Council Chamber to address the line-item vetoes made by Mayor Alan Arakawa on the Fiscal Year 2015 budget approved by the council, Council Chair Gladys Baisa announced today.

The mayor sent a letter to the County Clerk on June 16 detailing his objections to eight elements of the budget, including funding for a Kahului community center, which he called “premature.” The mayor also rejected appropriations for the Kula Agricultural Park, Molokai and Upcountry Maui water projects and a South Maui community park and multipurpose center.

“The council will carefully consider the mayor’s concerns,” Baisa said.

The council passed on second and final reading a $603.6 million budget at its June 6 meeting after more than two dozen committee meetings held in the Council Chamber and districts throughout Maui County from March 31 through May 5.

The council must act by June 26, or 10 days after the budget bill was returned. The charter requires a two-thirds vote to override the Mayor’s line-item vetoes.
