Paratransit service shows improvements

Posted on July 9, 2014 at 12:01 PM by Office of Council Services

On July 3, the Housing, Human Services, and Transportation Committee met to receive an update on the County’s paratransit program.

Since Maui Economic Opportunity was granted full operational control of the County’s paratransit service last July, some residents have been complaining about missed appointments and operational changes.  The County previously provided the service through Roberts Hawaii.

I echo Council Chair Gladys Baisa’s sentiments, who said during the meeting, “change is a difficult thing, especially for those with a set routine.”

Harry Johnson, Transportation Director of MEO, said the implementation of new transit scheduling software, and changes in the program’s rules and regulations are addressing the needs and concerns of their clients.

I am pleased to report Council members are receiving fewer complaints on services. Additionally, the committee learned a transportation advisory council was established to consider future improvements.

Marc Takamori, Deputy Director of the Department of Transportation, reported there are about 800 qualified paratransit riders and 70,000 boardings annually.

I congratulate MEO for a job well done and wish them continued success in providing quality service to our residents.
