It’s that time of the year again…and many of you may have already have done your Christmas shopping.  We can probably guess that you went to finds the best deals on Black Friday…you probably went even further and shopped online on Cyber Monday?

But did you consider buying Local?

Well, “Buy Local” this holiday season…it matters!

Buying local products matters because it supports Maui County businesses while helping to further stimulate our local economy.

Buying local reminds residents and businesses about the benefits of spending where they live, even if it costs slightly more.

“We have wonderful products made right here in Maui County,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa. “Jewelry, food, clothing, you name it. They make great gifts for family and friends and you support your neighbors at the same time.”

"Buying Local is the most pono thing we as residents of Maui Nui can do to help our community.  The money spent here on locally produced products stays in our community, creates jobs, and circulates within our community to benefit even more people,” said  Teena Rasmussen Office of Economic Director. “Our local products are unique, creative, and everyone likes getting an authentic gift from Maui!"

Just recently Gov. Neil Abercrombie and the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) launched a campaign to urge residents to buy and gift locally made products this holiday season. This campaign will also promote exportation of Hawaii's products to mainland and international markets.

Recently a delegation from China’s Home Shopping Network made a stopover on Maui to visit some local Maui businesses to promote on their shopping networks.  They are already planning on making a trip back to Maui very soon to visit more Maui businesses.

This holiday season we want to encourage all residents of Maui County to “Buy Local!”
