Maui County Council Blog

The Maui County Council is a nine-member legislative body of officials who are elected on at-large basis (i.e., all County voters can cast votes for all nine seats), one each from nine residency areas. Each Council member is elected for a two-year term.

Councilmember Hokama installed as First Vice President of National Association of Counties

FORT WORTH, TEXAS – Maui County Councilmember Riki Hokama has been installed as First Vice President of the National Association of Counties during the organization’s 78th Annual Conference and Exposition

The four-day NACo Legislative Conference and Exposition, which concludes today, provides a venue for county leaders and staff to learn and network. It also is an opportunity for members to vote on policies related to federal legislation and regulation.

Joining Hokama as part of Maui County’s delegation are Councilmembers Robert Carroll, Elle Cochran, Donald G. Couch, Jr. and Mike White,  Deputy Managing Director David Ching and Chief Technology Officer Jacob Verkerke.

On Thursday, the Council will consider a resolution urging the President and Congress to preserve the current tax-exempt status of municipal bonds. This significant issue for all counties was one of the hot topics discussed at the conference.

Linn County, Iowa Supervisor Linda Langston was installed as NACo President. Sallie Clark, Commissioner of El Paso County, Colo., will serve as Second Vice President.

Immediate Past President Chris Rodgers, who attended last month’s Hawaii State Association of Counties Conference in Kauai, gave congratulatory remarks for the incoming officers.

Matthew D. Chase will continue as Executive Director of NACo, serving as spokesperson for America’s counties before federal policymakers.
