Kahoma Village Project deliberations to continue tomorrow

WAILUKU, Hawaii – The Land Use Committee meeting of Jan. 22, relating to the proposed Kahoma Village Project, is in recess and will reconvene tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 24, at 1:30 p.m., Committee Vice-Chair Don Guzman announced last night.

The reconvened meeting on the Lahaina affordable-housing project will be held in the Council Chamber, 8th floor of the Kalana O Maui building, at 200 S. High St. in Wailuku.

After receiving oral testimony from 19 people yesterday, the meeting’s testimony period was closed. The committee met until 8:45 last night, questioning representatives of county departments and the developer and conducting deliberations, after convening at 1:34 p.m.

Written testimony may still be emailed to

“I want to thank the many members of the public, and area residents in particular, the departments and the developer, for providing the committee with substantial information to assist us in our deliberations,” Vice-Chair Guzman said. “As always, the committee’s challenge is to synthesize the information and come to a decision it feels will best serve the community’s interest.”

Following testimony Wednesday, the committee discussed proposed exemptions, modifications and project desirability. A site inspection on Front Street by the Kahoma Stream bridge was conducted Jan. 8, followed that afternoon by the first round of deliberations in the Council Chamber.

The project calls for 203 residential units, with 102 (51 percent) meeting the county’s affordability criteria. The project also includes three private parks encompassing 1.75 acres.

The project is proposed under Chapter 201H, Hawaii Revised Statutes, which provides a defined time frame for council decision making on qualified affordable-housing projects.

The Council must act on the proposal by Feb. 13.
