Press Release by: Councilmember Don S. Guzman Chair, Economic Development, Energy, Agriculture, and Recreation Committee Maui County Council
WAILUKU, Hawaii – The Maui County Council will consider legislation to name the Kahului Pool and Upcountry field after youth mentors at its meeting on Tuesday, April 22, at 9 a.m., Councilmember Don S. Guzman announced today.
One bill seeks to rename Field 6 at the Eddie Tam Complex in Makawao as the William “Blee” Amoral Sr. Field. Mr. Amoral began his career at Eddie Tam Memorial Complex in 1967.
As Supervisor of Recreation, he initiated basketball, football, volleyball, baseball and softball programs.
“Renaming Field 6 in Mr. Amoral’s memory is an appropriate way to honor his legacy and contributions to Upcountry athletics,” said Councilmember Guzman, whose Economic Development, Energy, Agriculture, and Recreation Committee recommended passage of the proposed bill.
The other bill, introduced by Guzman, seeks to rename the Kahului Pool to the Coach Spencer Shiraishi Memorial Pool. Mr. Shiraishi served as Coach for Maui Swim Club for nearly 50 years. He died on Aug. 29, 2013.
“Coach Shiraishi is undoubtedly worthy of this recognition,” Councilmember Guzman said. “He had a profound impact on the lives of countless Maui residents, even beyond swimming.”
The meeting will be held in the Council Chamber on the 8th floor of the Kalana O Maui building, 200 S. High St. in Wailuku. Testimony may be submitted in person or by email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
