Water Resources Committee to consider public testimony on proposed water shortages

WAILUKU – The Maui County Council’s Water Resources Committee has scheduled a meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday to discuss a proposed bill relating to water shortage declarations, which include possible water rate increases and other measures.

“This is an opportunity for members of the community to express their concerns about the water shortage bill,” said Committee Chair Michael Victorino. “We want the public’s input on this important matter before we make a final decision.”

The controversial bill gives the Director of Water Supply, with the consent of the Mayor, the authority to impose higher rates, and other water-saving measures, during times of drought or other water shortage.

“We want to protect the interests of our residents,” said Victorino, “but we also need to ensure an adequate supply of water during water shortage emergencies.”

The meeting will be held in the Council Chamber on the 8th floor of the County building at 200 South High Street.

The meeting is open to the public. Meeting agendas are available on the Water Resources Committee website. To receive meeting agendas via e-mail, please complete the on-line subscription form on the County website at www.mauicounty.gov. For more information, please contact the Water Resources Committee staff.
