The Environmental Coordinator responds to and coordinates a broad range of environmental issues, including five priorities designated by Mayor Tavares:

• Renewable Energy

Environmental Partnerships
The Environmental Coordinator responds to a steady flow of environmental concerns and acts as the Mayor’s liaison by pursuing multiple long-range projects and by collaborating with a wide range of organizations such as the:

• Maui Invasive Species Committee
• East Maui Watershed Partnership
• Community Work Day Program

Maui Conservation Alliance
The Environmental Coordinator is the current Chair of the Maui Conservation Alliance (MCA), which is a cooperative partnership of government, private, and non-profit organizations who manage Maui’s native ecosystems and watersheds. The MCA works to identify key issues and advance conservation efforts with a united voice.

In March 2009, Mayor Charmaine Tavares sponsored an MCA resolution supporting safe, effective biological control for Maui County's forest pests, which was passed unanimously by the Maui County Council.

A second resolution called, "Supporting the protection and long-term management of Maui County's watersheds" was sponsored by Mayor Tavares and passed by the Maui County Council in November 2009.
